The downtown is currently under water and the river is continuing to rise as I write this blog post.

This blog is about current events on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and not so much about headline news, but I thought this was some interesting news to share with Indigo Run. Alright, so what is happening this weekend on Hilton Head?

A LOT!

On Friday and Saturday night The Lavon Stevens Quartet will be playing at the Jazz Corner and you can catch the ever-so-popular Hilton Head Island band “Deas Guyz” on Sunday night.

On Saturday afternoon head over to the “Flag Day Festival” happening at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina. This should be a very good time. At 1:00 you can catch the Parris Island Marine Corps Band; 2:30 features Bob Mastellar and the Jazz Corner Musicians and at 3:30 it is your opportunity to meet the cast of the upcoming Buddy Holly performance! If you decide to go to this exciting Hilton Head Island outdoor festival then make sure to pop inside to the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina to view “Live with History,” an exhibit of photos from the New York Times Archives. These photos are said to chronicle over a century and a half of world history! How cool is that.

The biggest event of all is of course Fathers Day. Need some inspiration for a good recipe to cook up for Dad.

Here you go…

INGREDIENTS
• 8 (4 ounce) fillets salmon
• 1/2 cup peanut oil
• 4 tablespoons soy sauce
• 4 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
• 4 tablespoons green onions, chopped
• 3 teaspoons brown sugar
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger
• 2 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes
• 1 teaspoon sesame oil
DIRECTIONS
• Place salmon filets in a medium, nonporous glass dish. In a separate medium bowl, combine the peanut oil, soy sauce, vinegar, green onions, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, red pepper flakes, sesame oil and salt. Whisk together well, and pour over the fish. Cover and marinate the fish in the refrigerator for 4 to 6 hours.
• Prepare an outdoor grill with coals about 5 inches from the grate, and lightly oil the grate.
• Grill the fillets 5 inches from coals for 10 minutes per inch of thickness, measured at the thickest part, or until fish just flakes with a fork. Turn over halfway through cooking.
• teaspoon salt

Just writing that made me hungy!
Are you planning on traveling anywhere exciting this summer? They are a stubborn bunch and right now they have roped in the economy and if you listened to all they had to say you would be probably be losing sleep each night. This is not healthy, but most importantly it is just not entirely true. It is true that we are not in the best economy that this great country has ever seen, but it is also true that it is not the worst.

According to Brian Wesbury, who in 2001 was ranked by the Wall Street Journal as the country’s No. 1 economic forecaster, “current concerns about the economy are more a matter of negative perception than actual market factors.”

The top economist spoke on Tuesday night on Hilton Head Island to Hilton Head-based Tabby Road Wealth Management Group at a dinner event with Jim Bowen, president of First Trust Portfolios, in the clubhouse in Spanish Wells Plantation.

Wesbury believes that the “news media are too focused on negative turns in consumer confidence. The real driver of the economy is business investment and corporate profits, which are still doing well.”

It is Wesbury’s opinion that the economy is highly unlikely to have problems. “Wesbury is the chief economist at First Trust Advisors L.P., a Lisle, Ill.-based financial services firm and has more than 27 years experience. His experience is frequently sought for news stories about the state of the national economy.

It was nice to finally hear some positive economic news on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Let’s hope to see lots more of it!
Lots going on this weekend on Hilton Head Island, SC

There are some great events happening this weekend on Hilton Head Island, so get on out there and support the arts. Here are some that I suggest you do not miss.

Have you ever been to the Coligny Theatre? It is located in North Forest Beach, Hilton Head Island. It is a small, intimate venue to catch a good performance and afterwards you can go grab a drink or some dessert at one of many nearbye Oceanside cafes.

On Sunday from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. at the Coligny Theatre, Coligny Plaza, Hilton Head Island, world renowned Chicago vocalist, Spider Saloff will be performing. This should be a fantastic performance. You can also catch her at The Jazz Corner, Village of Wexford, Hilton Head Island on Friday and Saturday from 7:00 P.M. until?

Hmmm…What else is happening around Indigo Run, Hilton Head Island this weekend? A LOT!
If you are more in the mood for some loud rock and roll and dancing then look no further then the Shoreline Ballroom, Hilton Head Island. The roots-rock quartet hailing from Georgia, Tishamingo- The Last Waltz will be performing original material beginning at 7:00 P.M. tonight. Their name is a bit strange, but their music is supposed to be really good.

Elise Witt and the Mezzanine Band will be performing at 5:30 P.M. on Saturday in old town Port Royal as part of its weekly outdoor performance series.

And the biggest news of all…Indy’s back! The first place to see it will be at the Sea Turtle Cinemas at Berkeley Place in Bluffton at midnight on May 22nd. I think I will just wait a couple days and see it in the evening, but if you are a die hard Indiana Jones fan then there you go.

Have a great weekend Indigo Run, Hilton Head Island! Amazing! Summer is nearly upon us. This means increased traffic around Indigo Run and Hilton Head Island, but also a big boost to local business that rely on the yearly influx of tourists to keep them ticking along.

The David Bragg Team’s Beach Market office in North Forest Beach, Hilton Head Island, is directly across from two restaurants that depend on these annual arrivals to carry them through the slower months in the fall, winter and spring. Thank you Mike at Captain Seafood for the ice cold water and Hinchey’s for the colorful guests you attract on a daily basis. Somehow, each and every day Hinchey’s always has a few patrons who have enough time on their hands to just sit around and sip cold beer all day long and eat hot dogs. Good for them!

But, I am sure that many of these local businesses that depend on tourism are certainly concerned about rising fuel prices. When will it stop? How high will they go? How many people will decide to stay home this summer, rather then get nickel and dimed at the pump? These are questions that still remain unanswered and are a legitimate cause of worry.
My hope is that these people will decide that a vacation on Hilton Head Island is worth the extra Dollar or two at the pump. What do you think?

In the meantime, don’t worry too much. We live in the best nation in the world full of intelligent entrepreneurs and leading scientists who will find us a solution quickly. So, get out there, put that extra Dollar or two in the pump and head to some of these incredible Hilton Head Island Events happening this beautiful month of May.

May 5, 2008
8:00 PM
First Presbyterian Church.
843-842-2055
The Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra presents "The Dream of America", Peter Boyer's story of seven immigrants who came to America and also American classics by Hailstork, Ives and Gershwin.

May 6 to May 11, 2008
Beach city Road facility at 8:00 PM, matinees at 2:00 PM.
843-342-2057
The South Carolina Repertory Company presents "Oh. In this blog post, we are going to deviate away from events around Indigo Run, Hilton Head for just a moment to provide you with this interesting article about the Hilton Head Island real estate Market. It essentially states what The David Bragg Team already knew, but is always nice to hear again especially by a nationally distributed newspaper; Hilton Head Island, SC is indeed the greatest place to live.

Life on vacation: Hilton Head sports natural beauty.
By Larry Olmsted; special to USA Today
"You won't hear phrases such as "up and coming," "trendy" or "newly discovered" around Hilton Head, S.C. The second-largest barrier island on the East Coast has been a premier vacation-home community for decades. It was created in 1956 by Gen. Joseph Fraser with a novel "master plan," with one developer controlling everything from laying out roads to designing homes, a now-common model. To preserve the island's natural state, strict covenants were enacted and are maintained to this day in all 11 "plantations," as the island's mostly gated communities are known.
"We poll visitors regularly to find out why they come," says the Chamber of Commerce's Charlie Clark. "The answer we get most is 'the natural beauty.' … Fraser was maniacal about blending nature and homes. Today there are still no white houses allowed because they would stand out. No neon signs. No street lights, because they interfere with the night sky. No homes between the dunes and water. No high-rises."

For many homeowners, the appeal here is sports and recreation. The 12-mile-long, 5-mile-wide island has two dozen golf courses, including famed PGA Tour venue Harbour Town, ranked in the nation's top 20. There are five major tennis complexes with more than 100 courts, nature preserves and continuous beach spanning 12 miles. Biking and walking paths crisscross the island, and more than 250 restaurants serve a year-round population of fewer than 40,000.
In February, the island's average home price was $515,238; median, $405,000. Real estate prices are largely driven by proximity to the ocean. Plantations fall into three categories: 1) Resort communities have a mix of homes, condos (called "villas") and hotels. Facilities such as golf courses, beaches and tennis are open to the public. The biggest are Sea Pines and Palmetto Dunes. 2) Semi-private communities allow public access to golf and other amenities, but don't have hotels or allow owners to rent their homes. 3) Private communities have no public access or rentals, often allow only homes, not cond A look at the three types of plantations

• Sea Pines (resort). The island's original development is the most extensive, with four 18-hole golf courses by top designers, including Harbour Town, a large tennis center, more than 50 shops, 10 restaurants, five miles of beach, two marinas, a yacht club and a hotel. According to Drew Butler of Charter 1 North Realty, the average price is $1.6 million for homes and $545,000 for villas; both start at about $400,000. Arthur Blank, former Home Depot CEO and owner of the Atlanta Falcons, owns a home worth at least $12 million. seapines.com

• Hilton Head Plantation (semi-private). Homeowners enjoy the privacy that comes with a no-rental policy, but amenities including three golf courses, a marina and restaurants are open to outside use. Homes average $575,000; villas, $560,000, with some starting at just over $300,000. hiltonheadplantation.com

• Long Cove Club (private). With only single-family homes, no rentals and a relatively small number of lots (570), Long Cove has a private country club aesthetic. Famed for its Pete Dye-designed golf course, it also has the largest yacht club on the Carolina coast, tennis and more. New homeowners pay a $15,000 initiation fee, plus $9,470 in annual fees, which include golf and tennis. Average home price is $965,000; starting price, about $450,000. longcoveclub.org

Life on Vacation is a weekly look at a second-home market. It is a regional premiere of this production and should not be missed. Time Magazine calls it “a gift from the show-biz Gods!”

According to Arts Center website, ”Bialystock and Bloom! Those names should strike terror and hysteria in anyone familiar with Mel Brooks’ classic cult comedy film. Now as a big Broadway musical, The Producers sets the standard for modern, outrageous humor. The Arts Center will present the regional premiere of this truly “boffo” hit, which won twelve Tony Awards – the most in Broadway history! The plot is simple: a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history thereby bilking their backers (all “little old ladies”) out of millions of dollars. Only one thing goes awry: the show is a smash hit! The antics of Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom, as they maneuver their way fecklessly through finding a show, hiring a director, raising the money and finally going to prison for their misdeeds, is a lesson in laughter.”
If you live in Indigo Run and you appreciate theatre you should really try to get out and see this one.
